This was a very rewarding project commissioned by Doctor friends for their new office in La Jolla. They are architecture savvy and good design collectors and they gave me complete freedom to do their entire space including the reception, waiting, corridors, and screening rooms. They wanted the environment to be nurturing, warm and “not medical” feeling. Great! The receptionists desk was custom made with a metallic Formica front. The challenging-shaped waiting area called for a Herman Miller/Chadwick modular sofa, Nelson coffee table, Eames Storage Unit and Molded-Ply screen. The arm chairs are reupholstered vintage waiting-room chairs. The long corridor to the examination room could be threatening but with the play of the birch checkerboard wood walls leading to the secondary waiting area, it became a calming journey. At the corridor’s end I used a rock wall with a metal sculpture by Matt Devine and Jason Spakes as a focal point. We think it works great and the patients and staff seem to agree!
